South Shore

Chicago’s South Shore is a colorful, majestic neighborhood nestled along Lake Michigan. South Shore is nine miles south of downtown Chicago via Lake Shore Drive, which feeds into I-55, I-290, the Kennedy Expressway, and the Dan Ryan Expressway; two miles from the University of Chicago and three miles from the University of Chicago Medical Center, the largest research hospital in the region. The University of Chicago and Medical Center employs over 24,000 full time staff and faculty and hosts over 16,000 students. South Shore is also accessible with direct access to public transportation via South Jeffery Avenue, South Stony Island Avenue, and East 67th Street. The Chicago Transit Authority’s buses in the area arrive every 12 minutes and reach Chicago’s central business district in 22 minutes. This neighborhood has a high demand and as a result, rent growth there is outpacing all other south side neighborhoods.

Jackson Park is a 500-acre park designed by Fredrick Olmstead. It features neoclassical structures, a system of lagoons, lakefront beaches and harbors, a Japanese style Osaka Garden, and one of the country’s first public golf courses. South Shore residents have a rich, cultural life that is enhanced by the Jackson Park’s South Shore Country Club and Cultural Center, which offers year-round events including the South Shore Summer Festival, plays, operas, jazz festivals, and movies in the park. The South Shore Golf Course is a par 33 course offering panoramic views of Lake Michigan, tree-lined fairways, and small greens with practice chipping and putting areas. Jackson Park is home to the Museum of Science and Industry. Lakefront amenities include beautiful beaches, bike paths and the Jackson Park Inner and Outer Harbor, home of the Jackson Park Yacht Club. There has been recent chatter of the Tiger Woods Foundation working with architects to redesign this golf course. As well, the anticipated Obama Presidential Center and Library in Jackson Park is projected to be a one-billion-dollar project.
